‘my city postcards’ project
October 22, 2006, 9:50 am

hey guys,

i need your help! im in the middle of making my project (aptly named in the title) which consists of a interactive virtual mapping program, that i have developed in flash, that catalogues snapshots of city life around the world. for this project im obviously just focusing on melbourne…it is hoped this program will become a web based system that people can feed into and share their experiences and fav spaces of respite etc etc (sortove like a lonely planet concept or like those decks of cards – bar & club secrets)…a type of tourist guide for residents already in the city…heres where u can come in…ive already catalogued a few of my fav spaces in the city eg. my fav lunch spot, my fav running track, etc etc spaces that i personally use and enjoy…spaces that may differ from the more traditional tourist attraction circuit…spaces that locals can identify and connect with….

it would be great if i can get some of your fav spaces so i can include them into my program for presentation….they can be any spaces you like in the cbd and surrounding area! “c’mon create you own city postcard!” (haha sorry for the corny ad gimmick)  all you need to do is email me the folowing: 1/name of your space  2/describe it – why you like it etc 3/ how to get there…is there a special way…a short cut?  3/ a pic would b get you lollies and a special hi 5…

s3080037@studen.rmit.edu.au   or   drod_5@hotmail.com

anything goes guys….(except maybe strippers) its not that much of an underground tourist guide…. let me know ya thoughts….peace….dimitri

exhibition review

I would like to create a document collating each of our projects to date.

If each of us can provide me with a concise and pithy outline of your work including:

  • your name and student number and picture of yourself

  • area of interest

  • how you arrived at it (background to your thinking – the exploration that led you to where you are now)

  • the concept being proposed even if not completely resolved at this stage…an emerging thing is fine..

  • a copy of your poster – with text legible.

  • your review of someone elses work.

Much of this will be in your posters…which most of us took down..

Could you please send these to me as attachments via email at s3050465@student.rmit.edu.au ASAP.

It would also be great to create a log of reactions and sentiments undergone while navigating this whole “silence and other ways” brief…So if you are feeling particularly zealous maybe send through your rants and reflections on the progress of the studio…these don’t have to be academic or entertaining and can be out and out therapy or whatever- anything is appreciated – and does not have to be attributed.

exhib catering

Situation:

It appears that there was a misunderstanding and there were in fact 2 distinct stategies for last exhibitions catering -

1. Ben goes shopping and we all chip in

2.  everyone brings a plate

Upside: we enjoyed a veritable feast

Downside: Ben is out of pocket unduely.

Suggested Solution:

Anyone who did not bring said plate can make amends by providing some re-imbursement payable to Ben at the next class (sum to be advised  – but should be minimal)

Other suggestions welcomed.

Apologies for my role in the whole shmozzle.

Jo

I’ve tried to post this on the site about a thousand times, and by one thousand I mean about 3. The invites can be located @ http://www.auxylari.com/fermata3.pdf (it’s not actually fermata 3 either, that’s just a file save incrementation)

Any problems let me now ASAP and I’ll amend them by this afternoon.

scaling down sound- control and intimacy
September 12, 2006, 2:27 pm
Filed under: BOOK [4] missing[ness], FERMATA [2], Uncategorized

hi silencios,

anna and i (candice) are looking at how we can offer our stakeholders more control over the sound they hear – a way to manipulate existing sound in the city, in a particular space. we think that this personalisation of sound will make an intimate experience which becomes a form of respite or fermata in a soundscape of relatively large and distant sound. we already have a couple of ideas about how we will propose this for the next exhibition- to funnel sound into a small space (say like a sculpture with vents) and contain it momentarily, and  then letting it out at the users’ discretion ( if this is possible ?).  the other idea is about encouraging users to shut out city sounds by offering a medium for them to communicate their own sounds- for example a chinese whispers wall (interpretation open on that by the way).

what do you think – go on….

I thought this might be of interest. It’s an article from this month’s Age Melbourne Magazine and seems relevant to all of our sound shennanigans.

i found making my second ‘book of nothing’ quite hard. its differenent from the first one, more because the first one was more sculptural than bookish. i spent another hour in silence just meditating on it, not even moving or making.

To find out how to upload files click here

Files must be smaller than 1500kb – so in Acrobat go to “file” “reduce file size” – click it and save it as a version.

Make sure you check “a book about nothing” in the categories feild of your post
