hey guys,
i need your help! im in the middle of making my project (aptly named in the title) which consists of a interactive virtual mapping program, that i have developed in flash, that catalogues snapshots of city life around the world. for this project im obviously just focusing on melbourne…it is hoped this program will become a web based system that people can feed into and share their experiences and fav spaces of respite etc etc (sortove like a lonely planet concept or like those decks of cards – bar & club secrets)…a type of tourist guide for residents already in the city…heres where u can come in…ive already catalogued a few of my fav spaces in the city eg. my fav lunch spot, my fav running track, etc etc spaces that i personally use and enjoy…spaces that may differ from the more traditional tourist attraction circuit…spaces that locals can identify and connect with….
it would be great if i can get some of your fav spaces so i can include them into my program for presentation….they can be any spaces you like in the cbd and surrounding area! “c’mon create you own city postcard!” (haha sorry for the corny ad gimmick) all you need to do is email me the folowing: 1/name of your space 2/describe it – why you like it etc 3/ how to get there…is there a special way…a short cut? 3/ a pic would b get you lollies and a special hi 5…

anything goes guys….(except maybe strippers) its not that much of an underground tourist guide…. let me know ya thoughts….peace….dimitri

Does anyone know if there is a uniform length/width for the material from Fermata 01. I remember Liam talking about it but did we decide on a size?
“Convergence”
This is the final book.
This book is your “brief” for your design intervention for the final event (fermata 3) on
Thursday the 2nd November opening at 5pm.
This will need to relate to
a) the design studio agenda
b) your take on sites of respite
c) your studies and explorations of sound and the city so far
The book acts as an opportunity to collect, refine and clearly communicate your ideas/propositions.
It will be presented to a panel for assessment on Thursday the 26th of October from 9:30-6:30.
Therefore your book will need to function as a public presentation.
The due dates for books 4 and 5 have been modified.
Draft versions are due on Thursday the 26th of October from 9:30-6:30
Final and revised versions are now due on Friday the 10th at 9:30 am
on level four, building 87.

I would like to create a document collating each of our projects to date.
If each of us can provide me with a concise and pithy outline of your work including:
-
your name and student number and picture of yourself
-
area of interest
-
how you arrived at it (background to your thinking – the exploration that led you to where you are now)
-
the concept being proposed even if not completely resolved at this stage…an emerging thing is fine..
-
a copy of your poster – with text legible.
-
your review of someone elses work.
Much of this will be in your posters…which most of us took down..
Could you please send these to me as attachments via email at s3050465@student.rmit.edu.au ASAP.
It would also be great to create a log of reactions and sentiments undergone while navigating this whole “silence and other ways” brief…So if you are feeling particularly zealous maybe send through your rants and reflections on the progress of the studio…these don’t have to be academic or entertaining and can be out and out therapy or whatever- anything is appreciated – and does not have to be attributed.

Situation:
It appears that there was a misunderstanding and there were in fact 2 distinct stategies for last exhibitions catering -
1. Ben goes shopping and we all chip in
2. everyone brings a plate
Upside: we enjoyed a veritable feast
Downside: Ben is out of pocket unduely.
Suggested Solution:
Anyone who did not bring said plate can make amends by providing some re-imbursement payable to Ben at the next class (sum to be advised – but should be minimal)
Other suggestions welcomed.
Apologies for my role in the whole shmozzle.

Hi all – been scoping sites – at this stage there is the old reliable McCullock Gallery, Rankins Lane (just off Little Bourke between Elizabeth and Queen) and also the old Harley Heaven Place on the same street as Melbourne Artist Supplies – it is empty and warehouse-like – but i think there is running water and electricity – i have a number to contact and will confirm availability. Pics to come…fingers in knots etc..
hi silencios,
anna and i (candice) are looking at how we can offer our stakeholders more control over the sound they hear – a way to manipulate existing sound in the city, in a particular space. we think that this personalisation of sound will make an intimate experience which becomes a form of respite or fermata in a soundscape of relatively large and distant sound. we already have a couple of ideas about how we will propose this for the next exhibition- to funnel sound into a small space (say like a sculpture with vents) and contain it momentarily, and then letting it out at the users’ discretion ( if this is possible ?). the other idea is about encouraging users to shut out city sounds by offering a medium for them to communicate their own sounds- for example a chinese whispers wall (interpretation open on that by the way).
what do you think – go on….

Silence and Other Ways
So far you have been exploring your ideas in relation to your experiences and observations. Now we ask you to extend your work in relation to potential users / actants that could be implicated and impacted by your design proposition. You need to identify who could be the stakeholders in your project.Think about the specifics of your current idea (or where it might go from here).Locate / find a group of people who might have a stake in your project and develop a working relationship with them [approach them, talk to them, listen t their take on sound in the city]This is also a design problem, not just a case of finding people.Remake, rework and develop the idea of your mid semester exhibition.Think about how you can use design to include real stakeholders – invite them to the exhibition, work with them.Start using the blog as a way of discussing your ideas.
21st SeptemberExhibition (fermata event two):Must be publicly accessible and outside of rmit – but in the CBDRevise and develop in light of feedback from stakeholders etc for final submission.
The book will be due on Thursday the 19th of October.

Hi everyone,
Ok so to give the exhibition some sort of connecting element, can you do your own label based on this template. Keep it clear and to the point. Think about how your title and text can be used to solicit useful feedback / responses.
Print it out on glossy paper and mount it with JAC paper onto white 3 mm foam core.

Silence and other ways 10/8/2006
Research Toolkits:Given the specific nature of the study (sound in the city) it is crucial that you develop a set of research practices that provide meaningful learning experiences and design responses. The thing here is to have a set of methods that utilise different listening, documentation and technological practices but act to cohere your findings in some way. Here are some suggested methods (all of which contribute to the production of Book 2).
Spatial mapping of sound by type: This is essentially the method that Lawrence introduced to you last week, although his way resulted in a 2d representation of sounds in a concentric / radial fashion. It is a way of recording two types of sound (rhythmic and flat line /drone) and the time intervals of each audible sound over a twenty minute time envelope. This method records really useful data – but there is a lot of re-interpretation of this data for it to translate into a 3d spatial document of sound / silence. The key to this method is that it is repeated often at different times of day and in differing conditions. Then each ‘map’ can be overlayed (as transparencies) and real patterns can be seen.
But imagine if this process could be expanded so that it records:· Sound type· Location / direction (360 degrees)· Elevation· Decay· VolumeAll in a way that allows for a direct extrapolation into 3d spatial information.Design a method for this and test it.
Binaural Recording: This is a method of recording the sound of real experience form the embodied position of such and experience. That is, you record as you would hear. This is done by replacing your “ears” with small microphones that record into a left or right stereo channel. There are many benefits in this method:· It is non intrusive· It allows you to listen back to an aural experience· It can act as a concurrent method to other research and can be used to confirm findingsRead the links on the blog re: Binaural Recording and design and make your own recording device for next week. (we will review and re design these devices then)
Marquette’s / Making: Devoting time to ‘making’ is a really important research activity as it allows two crucial things to happen: · It isolates your ‘headspace’ into a process of construction and reconstruction of complex and abstract ideas – (writing does this as well)· It allows you to continually relocate the ideas that you have into a spatial medium that makes sense (the world is a 3d place).
So while you might be dealing with abstractions and seemingly obtuse information “making” is a way of grounding these thoughts into something that is real and is in the world.
What TSU has:
Audio:Tech services no-longer have a portable DAT recorder – but they do have the following:5 x Digital Audio Recorders (Stereo input / adjustable sample rate – MP3, WMA, WAV format capacity)Quite a few Digital Voice Recorders (lower sample rate – Stereo input – WMA format)Lots of Microphones Digital Video cameras with a stereo Mic input – can be used inplace of DAT
They can do transfer.

What is it and why? This book will narrate the semesters thinking, making, doing, exploring, procrastinating, etcIt is a book of ‘the making of’, including process of making and the things that become invisible in the final product but are critical to your learning or the development of the project.Whilst it could include everything it will require selection and inclusion of critical moments.Whilst you are the predominant audience, it is intended that this book could also give someone else an insight into your processes. This it is expected to be both documentation and reflective.A book of beginning to document and reflect on the mechanics of learning, of your learning. This is the book of truth. The book will be a return to your book of nothing. It will be a revision and re-thinking of your initial book in light of your developing interest. The process of making should be ongoing through out the semester.
The book will be due on Thursday the 19th of October.
Filed under: BOOK [2] A Book of listening
What is it?This book will act as a way of communicating your early explorations with sound in the city, based on research activities work-shopped with Lawrence Harvey and Michael Fowler [SIAL SOUND].It will be your first exposure to the Fermata Project. The book will take the form of an Audio Visual Presentation and will collectively be used as a way of opening up the discussion on sound in the city with those involved in the Fermata Project (SIAL, MCC, other interested parties).
How it will start:Thurs 3/8 1.30-5pm: n-space and city with Lawrence Harvey. Activities/lectures:Overview of acoustic ecology and resourcesCity Sounds project: background, process and resultsSound walkPerceptual Exercises and notationFriday 4/8 1-5pm: n-space with Michael Fowler, Activities/lectures:The fermata in musicNotationSpecial unscheduled short session Thurs 10/8 1.30 – 3.30pm: Jail [11.c.12] with Fiona and Liam.Activities/lectures:Research toolkitsPublic space and Melbourne
What will the book contain? The “Book of Listening” is more precisely a book [read – mechanism / device for telling a story] of your listening[s][read – aural discoveries in the city]. This is a place to put forward curated ideas about sound and the city via sound and material propositions and it has two distinct parts/chapters.Chapter One is essentially “audio”. It will be constructed out of recordings and compositions of sounds that you encounter in the city. To do this you will need to design and construct an instrument for collecting and interpreting aural information. This will be a combination of technologies and questions and research methods introduced to you by your lecturers. It will have a visual component [exterior or interface]. This could be physical / material or screen based. It could be dynamic or static. What you choose to do will become clear as your research progresses.
Chapter Two is concerned with the idea of your position in the articulation of your research into a series of ten (10) Marquette’s. A way of framing this design activity is to think of these “objects” as “listening posts”: think of bird hides, fire towers, crows nests or any structure / device that is designed for the observation of specific phenomena. SCALE: this book (and all of its contents) will be contained in a box no larger than an “A4 Transfer Box”
DUE: The point of submission will be an event on Thursday the 31st of August. You will design, organize and document this event.
What you interpret “Audio Visual” as constituting is open. However it is important that you present your ideas in a way that invites and provokes discussion – as it is this that will give you direction for the rest of the studio.
Resources:Download this freeware sound-editing suit. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/Web storage: You may need to store your book online so that it can be linked to the blog [blog file size restrictions may be inadequate. Use one of the more reputable free net storage services or use your RMIT net storage http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=tjda4cll2fmyYou will need to borrow a Portable DAT Recorder from TSU http://tech.tce.rmit.edu.au/ and may need to use their editing suits and other services for DAT to file transfer.

Remember it is still a “book”.
Observe one hour’s silence while making your book.
Document your process of “making”

Due 3/8
Students will evaluate their own design responses via a series of activities throughout the semester. Feedback will be solicited at student organized events from invited attendees.Students will communicate a desired grading at the start of the semester based upon their commitment to the project. This grade can and will be negotiated as the project progresses, in relation to a) the work of peers, b) the learning objectives set, c) the level of intellectual risk and reflection engaged in, and d) the level of autonomy, and capacity to manage complexity developed throughout the studio project.Developing strong methods of self and peer appraisal are essential for all professionals. Peer review and individual reflection will be central to a student measuring and monitoring their individual performance in the studio. This is seen as the responsibility of the student. Lecturers are there to assist in developing these capacities.
The studio will be self moderating. This means that there will be a spread of gradings available to students. This spread is essentially a bell curve: 15% = HD, 25% =DI, 35% =CR & 25% = PA. Students are asked to use this as a guide to self assessment and peer review.
Attached is a PDF that explains the assessment / grading in more detail.
